Alex

Alex

Alexsandr Mikhailovich "Alex" Tischenko, Ph.D. (Александр Михайлович Тищенко) was a nuclear physicist specializing in quantum mechanics working on the experimental teleporter being developed by KDEW & Associates in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When an overloading capacitor array caused the unintentional activation of the device he was, along with a colleague, sucked into a wormhole and deposited in an alternate dimension, having been transformed into a creature from ancient mythology.

Alex is the oldest son of Mikhail and Svetlana Tischenko, who were respected physicists who fled the Soviet Union in the early 1960s. Alex grew up in Oakland, California, near Lawrence Livermore Labs, where both parents worked. Alex earned his undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics at UC Berekley, later getting his master's in physics at MIT and his doctorate from Stanford. He did post graduate work at CERN (working down the hall from Tim Berners-Lee as he was developing the World Wide Web) and did early groundwork for the Large Hadron Collider.

Upon arrival in the new dimension, Alex has been more accepting of his condition than Sam. He tends to treat the unusual situations the pair finds themselves in as more of a problem to be solved. He would rather light a candle than curse the darkness. However, his inquisitive nature can lead to trouble, especially in a universe where the rules can be fluid and unforgiving.

Initially, Alex does not get along with Sam. He laments that of all the people he could pick to be stuck in an alternate reality with, she would be the last on the list. However, thanks to circumstances (and no amount of poking and prodding from Lenny), he is softening in his attitude toward her.

Samantha

Samantha

Samantha Agatha "Sam" Petersen, Ph.D.was working as a computer scientist, in charge of developing the computing systems needed for KDEW & Associates' experimental teleporter. She was pulled into an Einstein-Rosen bridge along with a colleague and deposited into an alternate universe. To her chagrin, she found herself transformed into a hybrid of human and horse, something she would have preferred to have not happened.

Before becoming a centaur, Sam had been an electronics and software engineer, specializing in real-time computer systems. Her expertise led to her being selected by NASA for the Manned Spaceflight Program. She was selected to fly as a Mission Specialist on STS-125, the last Hubble Servicing Mission. However, a last-minute bout of appendicitis ended her dreams of space flight and she left the astronaut program and NASA shortly after.

She was hired by KDEW & Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts as the Lead Computer Scientist. She was in charge of developing and deploying the computing resources required for the teleporter project. An error in software written by Sam's team caused a capacitor array to overload, activating the system before it was ready. The resulting wormhole pulled Sam in and the Worst Thursday Ever was underway.

Sam is initially hostile toward Alex. She doesn't want to be in this universe and she certainly doesn't want to be there with him. However, as time goes along, she begins to soften toward him, even admitting that she is starting to fall in love. Alex, however doesn't reciprocate, but does leave open the possibility that things could change in the future.

Sam was raised in a military family. Her father, who was a senior enlisted man in the United States Air Force, took out his frustrations with his career and life on his daughter, who he drove mercilessly to achieve what he could not. She still hears his voice, calling her out as not good enough to carry the mantle that fate has paid upon her.

Lenny

Lenny

Idlennhassar the Magnificent, Magister of the Djinn—better known as "Lenny"—is the companion, guide and general throrn in the side of Alex and Sam. And he's purple.
